Creativity and travel

Da The Washington Post, Creativity may be the Guide to Healthy Aging. 19 luglio 2021
“People who travel tend to be more creative,” said Darya Zabelina, a psychology professor at the University of Arkansas Traveling encourages people to reexamine their models of reality, Zabelina said. Some studies show that travelers have more creative success, and people who enjoy unfamiliar experiences perform better on divergent thinking tests, open-ended questions calling for numerous ideas. Performance on these tests differs from IQ and may predict aspects of real-world creativity.

Il Colibri /The Hummingbird by Sandro Veronesi Let us pray for him, and for all the ships  out at sea,” writes   Sandro Veronesi , in both the opening and closing chapters of his novel   The Hummingbird . Bookended like a call to prayer, Veronesi’s most acclaimed work, recently published in English, is a reflective and hopeful contemporary take on the Italian family saga, following Marco Carrera, a middle-class family man who manages to hover over the chaos of his life as winds of change threaten to blow him off course.   The Hummingbird  has captivated European readers, selling more than 300,000 copies in Italy alone and making Veronesi only the second author to win the Premio Strega, Italy’s most prestigious literary award, twice. The film adaptation is in production in Italy, starring Nanni Moretti (winner of the Cannes Palm d’Or) and Bérénice Bejo (nominated for an Oscar for her role in  The Artist ) and the novel hashe work has already been translated ...

13 luglio Mardi David and Pisa

Anche, nostra viaggio in Italia. Questo tempo andiamo a Academia vedere David. Molto, molto, bello.  And then if was off via alleys and larger roads to the Galleria dell’Academia, which contains the incredible marble statue of David created by Michelangelo between 1501 and 1504 when he was still in his late 20’s.   Several other sculptors had taken this 17-foot-high chunk of marble and begun carving out the lower legs portion half a century earlier, but the work then lapsed. Michelangelo then took up the job and sculpted an astonishing figure of a young man (the Biblical David who slew Goliath) with astonishingly accurate bodily contours with the exception of an outsized head and hands.   Yet you do not notice these, however, unless you study the statue with the expert eye of an artist (lacking in this observer) or have read a guidebook in advance (nope) and been aware of it.   What I did question was why David’s penis was uncircumcised.   As a Jewish lad,...

Firenze 2011 Dante

Image
Viaggiamo in Italia in 2011.  Vistiamo a Firenze e ci siamo innamorati di Firenze. Ecco è una storia di nostra viaggio.  Ah Dante. What a romantic figure! We headed to the Dante Museum on the tiny street where he lived.  It is a few houses away from the small church of St. Margherita, where he probably first laid eyes on Beatrice at age 9 and was instantly smitten.  Alas, both he and Beatrice had been pledged to wed someone else, arranged marriages being all the rage back then.  He only saw her now and then the rest of her life, which ended at age 24.  But even after her death, thoughts of her inspired him as he wrote the awesome “Divine Comedy”.  Kathy got some excellent photos both of St. Margherita’s and of the young actor who recited from the epic poem in the courtyard outside the Dante Museum, dressed in a 13 th century costume complete with the type of garlanded headband favored by Dante. I applauded and dropped a two-euro coin in the tip bucket...
